A few days ago, we made contact with Mike Kilpatrick, a principle at a high school in surrey, who had some insightful information to share on our issue. Mr. Kilpatrick said that the causes of drugs in schools are no different then the causes in society. This drug usage stems from things such as mental health, family modeling, and drug use in society. Solutions to this issue strongly depend on the causes behind drug use. If we look at these causes we see that again, education is a main factor. If users are using drugs to self medicate then they need proper mental care, and counselling also needs to be available for these students. Mr. Kilpatrick stated that schools are doing enough to help students, however this is a larger problem that affects the entire community, schools are just one place where the issue manifests itself. He stated that drugs can only be eradicated from schools if they are eradicated from the community itself. The main thing that we can do to aid students with this problem is to increase resources that are already being used at this time. Resources such as support, education of the risks and harms, and a better integration of support between schools and community's. All of these things will help in the decline of drug usage in schools. -Katie
